Animation Rubric

Animation: Character AnimationAnimation: Character AnimationCopy and paste this onto your blog, then answer the questions. MAKE SURE TO LOG OUT OF YOUR HILLIARDSCHOOLS.ORG ACCOUNT BEFORE YOU LOG INTO BLOGGER!

Describe a challenge (or set of challenges) you faced in planning for your sequence.
A challenge I faced while working was planning out what I wanted to do for rotoscoping, I really wanted to do that but I felt as though I needed a cow in order to make it make since. A problem I had when animating was making the cow look like it was attached to a wall, I thought it didn’t look realistic so I changed it to something funkier.

How did you meet the challenge?
I went through magazines and found things that i thought were interesting or funny and put them all aside and then tried to collage them together.

Describe your rationale for animating what you animated, and for using the method (stop frame vs cut paper vs handdrawn vs rotoscope etc) you chose. I chose to animate because I really like the process of going through magazines and finding things that appeal to the eye and cutting them out. I thought animating would fit best with my sound because I wanted to show a cow and I wanted to make it goofy and I think magazines full of different things give a person the chance to do what they want with a lot of different things.

What was the best part of the project? The worst? The best of the project was putting all of the different animations together and seeing how it flows or doesn’t flow. This project was really fun it was short and sweet but really cool to see it all put together. Hearing different stories was pretty cool as well.

Protagonist vs. Antagonist Brainstorm Writing

Copy and paste this onto your blog. (command C, command V)

You will write details about six characters; three antagonists, three protagonists.

Begin with one character, a protagonist. Write down their name. Write their current desires and motivations in life. Write down their childhood/backstory. These are the most important pieces.

Now write down their physical description, physical quirks, personality flaws. This is secondary to the motivation and backstory. It’s the icing on the cake, and it’s still important.

Now write that character’s nemesis using the exact same process (desires, backstory, physical ing onionsand personality quirks, etc). Think about why and how they are blocking the protagonist from achieving their goal. Is it malicious? Accidental?

Repeat this with two other sets of characters.

NOTE: You do not have to use all or any of these characters for your video if you don’t want to. It is an exercise to get you thinking about character building. On the other hand, this may trigger some brilliant thought that leads to a wonderful video project. You won’t know unless you put your heart and head into it.

Protagonist- Sarah is an average senior at her local school, she has a lot of friends, but feels as though life is getting in the way of her true desires. Right when sarahs beginning her path as an artist and entering into festivals she draws up a character that begins to talk to her.

Antagonist-Malcom is an animated character drawn by sarah. Sarah draws up this character and then looses her train of thought where she wants to go with it, she decides to go to bed a little annoyed. She comes back the next day to find that her main character malcom isnt on her notebook page anymore. She begins turning through her notebook and finding that malcom has destroyed all of her other art pieces. Malcom begins telling her that her drawings arent good enough and they're going to get her no where. Malcom begins animating his on set of drawings and putting sarah name on it. Before sarah even knew it her notebook was emitted into the animated festival and accepted. Sarah feels as though she will never be good enough to create her own self fulfilling artwork.

Protagonist 2- Kathy is a new girl at her school, after transferring from another state she found that people at her new school arent as friendly as she thought. Kathy misses going to the movies and hanging out with her old friends. She likes music, bowling, and writing.

Screen Treatment

Scene one: Sarah is walking home from her first day of school, getting ready to encounter her mom who will ask how her day was. Sarah before steeping into the house takes a deep sigh then opens the door.

Scene two: She walks up to her room slowly and quietly, mostly trying to avoid her mother and siblings. Soon enough as sarah is putting her book bag down her mother opens her bedroom door and begins asking how her school day was. sarah replies and tells her that it was alright nothing new than what shes use to, except theres an animating contest and the final product is due tomorrow. Sarahs mom asks if she is going to try and enter something in? Sarah says yes but she hasnt gotten any ideas yet. Her mom says alright honey and leaves the room.

Scene three: Sarah begins wandering about her room, sketching an assortment of things trying to come up with the perfect character. This scene is a little agonizing for Sarah because she cant quite figure out where she wants to go with her animation. She looks out the window every hour still mindless of what she wants to do and before she knows it, its dark outside.(the sky going from light to dark over a period of a day)

Scene four: Sarah finally draws up a character she likes and puts the name Malcolm under it, and circles him. Before going any father she puts her pen down and walks out her room to grab a cup of coffe.

Scene five: Sarah goes downstairs and gets a glass of coffe.

Scene six: When sarah gets back to into her room she notices that her notebook isnt the way she left it, she left it open with her pen on top, but when she returns her pen is nowhere to be found and the notebook is closed. Sarah gives a strong look of confusion and wanders over to her notebook. As she flips to the page that she had just drawn Malcolm, he is no longer on it. The surrounding setting of where he was at is still there but the character is gone and there are little footprints trailing off the page. She flips the page again and theres still little animated foot prints. She flips some more and jumps back for Malcom says to her "HEY THERE."
Sarah startled as can be replied with hello? and then gives herself a little tap across the face wondering if it was all a dream. Malcolm answers her thought and replies "no this is no dream my friend, im here to stop you from entering a disaster into your school art show. You want to win the prize right?" Sarah looks around her room to make sure no one will see her talking to a piece of paper and replies "Are you sure im not dreaming?" Malcolm ensures her that this is no dream and begins walking across the paper back in forth. He begins showing her what it takes to win this art show, by having her flip the next page. She asks him where her pen is, because shes had it ever since she was a little girl. He replies "your pen is no longer here, i am your pen now" sarah replies "No that cant be, i've had that pen as long as i can remember" he ensures her that she will not find a pen anywhere in her house, for he has taken all of them and that if she wants to win this art show and actually become someone at her school, she must quit wondering where her pen is and listen up. he tells sarah that he wants her to go to sleep and rest up for her big showing tomorrow, and to leave everything to him. Sarah already tired, passes out.

Scene seven: She wakes up the next morning and flips open her notebook, it is filled with artwork that is completely different than what she had expected. Malcolm asks her "Are you ready for your big day?" she replies "will seeing as i have no other choice, sure." Sarah puts her notebook and all her school supplies into her book bag and begins her walk to school. When sarah gets there, she drops her notebook into art show submission box and walks away...

  1. What kind of details does Carver choose to describe the “place?”
Carver in the beginning talks about the bed and the surroundings of the room and how the bedroom looks like it did on the inside. There was her side, and his side with a lamp on both sides. He talks a lot about where things were in the bedroom and things that are taken out now but in the same place. "He had run an extension cord on out there and everything was connected. Things worked, no different from how it was when they were inside."

  2. 2.What do the following passages tell you about the place? The girl sat on the bed. She pushed off her shoes and lay back. She thought she could see a star.”

“Lights came on in the houses up and down the street.”

To me it seemed like not a lot of things happen in the neighborhood, or maybe something happened to the man that put the furniture out there. This may make the neighbors worried about him when they see people by his house or around his house.

  3. 3.Now look at the passages that you chose. How do they talk about the place? Why are they important or unimportant?
The passages i chose show that the house is completely the same he just moved it outside. You can tell that there is a reason the man wanted everything to be in the same set up outside his house, it makes you think that maybe something happened to his significant other.

    "His side, her side. "
"He considered this as he sipped the whiskey. "

Group Evaluation

Criteria: Group Movie Project

Describe your role in the production of the class movie. How did your contribution make things more efficient? How did you help make the movie better? What specific contributions did you make? Did you go above and beyond, or simply show up? Be honest.

My role in the production of the class movie was helping out as much as i could behind the scenes. Some of the things i did to help out included managing audio a few times, being director of the script and a small acting role in the movie. I do not believe i did anything too significant that i can say was only set by me, but whenever i was in a group or around someone i could add my input too, i did. I enjoyed listening to everyone and hearing their ideas and trying to find a balance with the rest of the class.

Describe one or more things you learned about the writing process that you did not know before working on this project.
The writing process showed me how to set up a movie in a non script way. I learned that it is best firt set an idea for the movie, what you want to film, where you want to film, and how you want to film and then ask yourself questions that will add more scenes to that one to make it make since. For instance if "sarah" is mad and screaming at "luke" in one scene, maybe the one after it should be sarah talking to her friend explaining why her and luke are fighting.

e one or more things you learned about the production (filming) process that you did not know before working on this project.

Something that i learned about what it was like to film was that you may set out a scene and think that it will only take one shot to accomplish, but it takes much more than that. Filming isn't just getting one pan shot of a scene but its getting a variety of shots that will make the movie better, and easier to put together. I learned that its always better to have more vivid shots than just one shot. thats boring and leaves you with less to work with.

Describe one or more things you learned about the post-production (editing, sound, etc.) process that you did not know before working on this project.

Something that i learned about editing and sound was how to make another scenes sound play over the scene you're watching to make a better transistion. I really liked how we did that to the part of henry getting the helmet slammed on his head, i thought it made that scene make a lot more since.

Are you satisfied with the final product? Why or why not? Be honest.

I am very satisfied with the class production, i thought it was a VERY fun project and i enjoyed listening to everyone and seeing what they did with their scenes. I liked the amount of individual freedom and the amount of freedom we had has a whole class to accomplish things. Although i was a little confused about the story line at first and how it was all going to fit, once we got the ball rolling and everyone was communicating more i think we out the movie together in our own way. I really like the way it has came out already so when it is completely finished i think it will be a lot more worth while.

Suggest one improvement for next year’s class. What could I do to make it easier/better/more informative/more fun? The only thing that i wish i could have learned more about was importing and editing sound. I know we were cut short for time, but i was interested in the process of working with sound and getting a better visualization of how thats done. But the whole process of putting the movie together i cant see done in a different way, working with a lot of people with a lot of different ideas is just simply a little hard.

What is Creativity?

Creativity i think can mean a lot of different things to certain people. But to me creativity is being able to look at ordinary things in a different aspect. I think creativity is taking the norm out of everyday objects or activities and turning it into a work of art or an activity for kids, or just something that changes your outlook. I believe creativity can stem from anything and everything and sometimes it takes along time to distinguish if its creative or not. Creativity can come from the way you walk, talk, dress, to the things you do.

Someone who is creative to me is someone that takes more effort in their everyday outlook on life, someone who looks at things in a different light. Or likes to take ordinary objects and say "What can i do with this?" or "how can i make this back to they way it was?" I think creativity begins in the mind as an enlightened thought of something you want to do, then moves to your hands, and as soon as you pick something up and begin making something for yourself, or something you like, i believe thats what makes you a creative person or begins the stimuli of creativity.

Someone who i think is not creative is someone who just goes with the flow of everyday life, someone who doesn't really do anything but try and get by in their everyday festivities. For instance, someone who plays video-games all day everyday, i would say is reliant on people to make things fun for them. Why not make your own video game? or why-not sew your own clothes? Maybe make yourself a desk for your room, that you designed. Creativity i think stems from you, and relying on others creativity is just what we buy online or in stores.  To actually make something is creating, and making something you did for yourself, or for someone else is one of the best feelings ive ever experienced.
